1.Stop drink
Alcohol is toxic to the liver. Excessive drink for years commonly lead to liver damage. The extent of damage is correlated with the amount of alcohol intake and the duration. The condition in which the liver damage is caused by alcohol specifically known as alcoholic liver disease. This condition may later develops into liver cirrhosis followed by cancer of the liver.

Excessive fats is toxic to the liver, may lead to condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Adopt a healthy, well-balanced diet consists of lots of fruits and vegetables.

Keep your body fit and maintain your metabolism to avoid excessive accumulation of cholesterol, fat and sugar in your body.

5.Control cholesterol and sugar level
Excessive cholesterol and sugar are toxic to the liver. Ensure your cholesterol and sugar level regularly checked and keep it at safe level by healthy lifestyle and/or medication as suggested by your doctor.

6.Go for regular medical check up
Some medical conditions pose risk on your liver, such as diabetes mellitus and obesity. Seek medical treatment to make sure these conditions are under control.
Some people are at higher risk to have liver damage compare to others because they have family history of liver disease, as some of the diseases are hereditary, for example Wilson's disease and hemochromatosis. If these diseases run in your family, make sure you undergo regular medical check up so that the disease can be detected at the early stage.

7.Update your vaccination
Viral hepatitis is one cause of liver damage if left untreated especially Hepatitis B and C. These infections can be prevented by vaccination.

8.Avoid unhygienic tattooing / body piercing
If you plan to get a tattoo, make sure the equipment and ink used are sterile. For those who go for acupuncture, make sure the needles are sterilised. Avoid intravenous drug use. These steps help to prevent infection, specifically liver infection.

9.Practise safe sex
Hepatitis B and C can spread via sexual contact. Practising safe sex can help prevent these infection of the liver.

10.Don't play doctor
Some medications may increased one's risk of liver damage for example paracetamol. Excessive intake of paracetamol is known to lead to liver damage, therefore it is important to follow the recommended dose. Another example is anti-cholesterol drugs, statins. The doctor may want to regularly monitor your liver function when he/she prescribing the drugs for you.
Some supplements may contain substance causing liver damage for example steroid. Make sure your supplements are safe and approved by the proper.
