Many travelers regard vaccination as one of those trivial matters during planning a vacation. They tend to put it down as the last line on their checklist, and often deliberately missed it out for there are much more important things to be done so that they can make the most of their holiday. More often, they do not think of it at all. Travelers are at risk of infectious disease during traveling because some of the destinations are home for these infections. By taking vaccination, the risk of contracting some of these nasty infection can be reduced. Therefore, vaccination should be considered together with other crucial necessities for traveling.
Among the common infection that typically contracted during traveling is hepatitis A. It is caused by a type of virus, which affecting the liver. Affected individuals may get it by consuming shellfish contaminated with raw sewage. They may develop fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Treatment is conservative. It usually last for few days and is self-limiting.
Influenza is also common among travelers. It is caused by a type of virus affecting the respiratory tract. The symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever and body ache. Sometimes, it can be serious in high risk group that it may lead to fatal especially when it progresses to respiratory complications such as exacerbation of asthma in asthmatic individuals.
Typhoid is common among travelers that travel to countries with poor hygiene and sanitation. It is caused by Salmonella typhi or Salmonella paratyphi bacteria, which can spread throughout the body. One could get it via fecal-oral route, by which one consuming food or drinks contaminated with feces of someone with typhoid. The most prominent symptom is prolonged fever. Other symptoms might also be present including nonspecific symptoms such as chills, weakness, loss of appetite; gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation or diarrhea.
Ideally, appointment with a doctor should be arranged 4 - 6 weeks before traveling, as some vaccines require time to take effect in our body. A doctor may need to considered few factors before determine which vaccinations you require. These include age, medical condition, previous immunization, history of developing adverse reaction, and trip destinations.
Infection may be treatable even though some of them may cause death. However, one may have their vacation ruined by getting those infection.Despite enjoying the relaxing and comforting atmosphere in the places of interests, one might have to be admitted to hospital, or may be just staying in the hotel room, lying in the bed for two to three days, due to the infection. Therefore, prevention is still better than cure. Keep the risk of infection to a minimum, so that you can make the most of your vacation.
